What is Comcosy?
Comcosy a Limited Company created with the commitment to transforming the furniture and decoration industry, offering an affordable and high quality alternative, based on the principles of circular economy.
We make this happen through our product, www.comcosy.com, a social marketplace, where our clients can say what they need by posting briefs and the network of artisans and makers can respond with proposals. We encourage communication between members of the network and the second-hand furniture market, extending the life of good quality products thanks to the collaboration between clients and makers.
We have developed a business model that not only covers a gap in the market but is also held together by our values as individuals and as a company:
-
Rescue handcrafting: In Comcosy we are going to promote both the professionals behind the unique items, their way of working and the product itself. They are all different and have a story to tell.
-
What is our medium term goal?
-
Location wise, our activity is currently in Madrid and we are going to open in Barcelona and Valencia. During the third year we will also open in London and Paris. Ours is a scalable business and it makes sense to open in the main European cities during the first few years.
-
To create brand awareness we are going to target three types of key clients: young professionals renting in big cities, mature women that wish to redecorate their homes and new property owners.
-
We are also creating alliances with companies that can offer transport, photography and other complementary services to Comcosy’s core activity.
-
The first year we want to acquire 5.000 client-users and 450 professional-users.
-
Develop and launch our new platform, followed by a testing phase and adjustments.
-
Execute our Marketing Plan for the Launch Campaign.
What would you be investing on?
You would be investing in Comcosy! The social marketplace for furniture and decoration where we give a voice to the clients and visibility to the makers; encouraging communication between them for the creation and renovation of exclusive products.
Comcosy is part of the movement towards sustainable manufacturing and consumption. We have created an online platform in order to solve our clients’ challenges with environmentally friendly solutions.
You would be investing in Comcosy’s Team. Initially formed by Pilar and Marta, but it’s growing everyday, together with our community, with artisans and makers, clients and collaborators. As you already know, we decided to leave our jobs in order to be fully dedicated to this project, because we believe in it and in our capacity to make it happen.
You are invited to be part of Comcosy as well!
What do we need?
For the first year we have estimated that we need a 145,000€ investment. We will reach this amount through internal and external sources.
We have already applied to several grants and loans for entrepreneurs. Our Aval Madrid has been approved - They act as a guarantor for our debt based on a risk analysis of our project and allow us to access to loans with very good conditions for startups.
We have also applied to ENISA Young Entrepreneurs (30,000 euros), a grant from the Ministry of Culture (up to 60,000 euros) and another grant for Women Entrepreneurs from the Comunidad de Madrid (up to 25,000 euros). In all these different sources of funds there is a requirement for us to cover at least 30% of the amount requested. That is why we are also looking to have investment from family and friends, so we can access these loans and grants .
We will also apply at the end of this year to La Bolsa Social, a social crowdfunding platform for investment (not donations) in projects with a strong social incentive.
What do we need the money for?
The 145,000 euros that we are trying to reach is for:
-
Marketing and PR: Particularly the first campaigns to make sure we grow at the speed necessary to become a profitable company.
-
Online Platform that includes the features for communications and project creation between users, e-commerce, ratings, etc.
-
Growth to other cities in Spain, UK and France.
-
Other services that for now we need to take care of like photography, events, HR, transport, etc.
Why is it so important to have this investment in order to be successful?
The initial investment is crucial in any company. For us, as a marketplace, it is particularly important that we grow quickly in the first year. Other companies are doing similar business models in the US and Australia, like Handkrafted and they are doing really well. Our advantage will be to grow fast in Europe so that we are established as the place to go to if you like unique handcrafted furniture and decoration.
Also, as we are a commision-based company, we need a minimum number of transactions (and therefore users) to be profitable.
What possibilities are out there regarding investment?
Equity: You can acquire shares of Comcosy and become a shareholder. We have in mind to give away 5-10% equity in total during this round of investment.
Convertible Loan: Comcosy receives a loan, which the investor can potentially convert into equity, subject to the conditions prefixed by both parties. These could be dependant on factors such as going into a second round of investment, achieving certain milestones or applying certain fixed dates and and conditions.
Participative Loan: It is an open loan in which the interest type is conditioned by the company evolution. It does not need to be positive (If the company does not obtain benefits, it could be zero) This kind of loan is regulated by the spanish system in the RDL 7/1996. It is most commonly used by business angels, venture capital entities and some specific forms of investment to enterprises with technological bases.
In all of these cases, the value needs to be assessed and discussed, however, if Comcosy is not going as expected, with a convertible loan the investor will have a better position in case of bankruptcy, liquidation or dissolution of the company.
In which moment are we going to give back money?
Firstly, it must be clarified for your peace of mind, that the money invested will only be used if the mentioned credits are achieved by Comcosy. However, as we have mentioned above, we need an initial investment both personal and from our relatives and friends, in order to be able to access those credits and aids for entrepreneurships.
We will be keeping you updated about Comcosy´s evolution and the milestones achieved, reaching the devolution phases as previously agreed.
Why it is a viable investment?
The decision of leaving our jobs and commit to Comcosy was a decision we took after thinking about it a lot and realising that it has a lot of potential. This is why we’re betting on it.
In order to establish our idea we did our market research based on the sector statistics and also questionnaires to our target suppliers and customers. We organised a flea market where we studied the interactions and transactions that occurred. We saw that there was a market niche. Here’s some data that proves these findings:
-
The furniture market in Spain, moves around 3,000 million euros per year (Livingo)
-
In 2016, furniture e-commerce market in Europe has invoiced of 32,000 Million (in 2008 it was over 500M) (Livingo).
-
Spanish internet users, between 20 and 40 years of age, buy online decoration. The ranking of the most sold products in 2015 includes chairs, beds, wardrobes, bookcases and desks. (Ebay)
-
Surveys done by Sondea have revealed that 59% of young people (between 18 and 35 years of age) sell the things that they do not use anymore online.
According to that, we are in a growing market in which there is a clear trend towards online selling and reselling. We also felt concerned about the collateral effects that the “cheap” furniture market was causing, such as the waste and the deforestation.
Once we reached this point, we didn’t have any doubt, we had to find an alternative to the “use and throw” furniture process and it should give personality to our homes.
Moreover, another main motive is that we want to bet on a creative, innovative, respectful project, in which hard work is compensated with knowledge and unforgettable experiences.
